Tunnel to Towers Foundation has begun construction on a mortgage-free smart home in Oxford, Maine, for Army SGT Christina Gardner, who was catastrophically injured while serving abroad in 2006. Gardner lost both legs below the knees, incurred a lumbar spinal cord injury and skull fractures resulting in a traumatic brain injury, and lost two fingers on her left hand. The custom-built smart home will be designed to meet SGT Gardner’s specific needs, enabling her to live as independently as possible. Sgt. 1st Class Joshua “Zach” Beale, 32, was killed by small arms fire on January 22, 2019, in Tirin Kut, the capital city of Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province, while conducting combat operations. That was his fourth overseas tour and his third tour to Afghanistan.
He was assigned to SFODA 3123, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

SFC Beale had enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2011. He attended Basic Training in Fort Benning, Georgia, where he also graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School. Beale graduated in 2013 from the Special Forces Qualification Course and was subsequently assigned to 3rd SFG (A).
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation announced the mortgage on the Hoke County home of fallen U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Joshua âZackâ Beale has been paid-in-full through its Gold Star Family Home Program.
SFC Beale, 32, was killed in action while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan on January 22, 2019. He enlisted in the Army in 2011, and was on his third tour in Afghanistan at the time of his death.
SFC Beale left behind his wife, Lindsey, and their two children, Leah and Hannah.
The mortgage payoff is part of the Foundationâs second annual Season of Hope, during which it will deliver 36 mortgage-free homes between Thanksgiving and New Yearâs Eve.
