CLEVELAND, Ohio Prior to recently reaching an agreement with free agent second baseman Cesar Hernandez, the bulk of the Indians’ offseason payroll expenditures manifested behind the plate.
Primary catcher Roberto Pérez had his club option exercised for $5.5 million while arbitration-eligible backup Austin Hedges agreed to a $3.28 million deal for 2021.
With those two players making up nearly 20% of the team’s projected payroll, it’s hard to look elsewhere in the organization and have too much expectation. But there are options for Cleveland should catastrophe strike this season.
