Vendée Globe Day 72 morning update: Burton on the button, first out Doldrums

Bureau Vallée - Vendée Globe © Vincent Olivaud It seems to be Louis Burton on Bureau Vallée who has finally escaped from the Doldrums first. He has been making a consistent 17kts early this morning in the 16-18kts NE ly trade winds which seem to be well established. With the exception of Charlie Dalin who is 115 nautical miles to his SE, the pack is well dispersed and mostly still struggling with an ICTZ which is proving much more active and sticky than was expected. At this stage northing - that is latitude the north - is everything and Burton has emerged to be at 6 degrees 30 North on Monday at 0400hrs UTC while the nominal rankings leader Charlie Dalin (Apivia) was still struggling in a fickle breeze at 5 degrees 50 North. Behind and to the east the main group is really struggling at between two and seven knots while Thomas Ruyant (LinkedOut) and Boris Herrmann (Seaexplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco) are further north than them and, closer to 34 degrees West wh

Vendée Globe Day 71: Dalin leads the North Atlantic climb

Charlie Dalin on Apivia retakes the lead in the Vendée Globe © Charlie Dalin / Apivia #VG2020 The Doldrums did not give up the Vendée Globe leaders as easily as was initially predicted but first placed Charlie Dalin (Apivia) appears to have skirted round the worst of a dynamic cloud system and emerged this afternoon with his margin intact. Dalin s more easterly position and his timing seems to have kept him away from a nasty zone of cloud and light winds which slowed Germany s Boris Herrmann for a period today, conceding third place on the leaderboard to Thomas Ruyant (LinkedOut).

Vendée Globe Day 70: Burton to lead across the Equator?

Louis Burton on Bureau Vallée II - Vendée Globe © Stephane Maillard Considering the speed that phenomena evolve in the Doldrums a little luck is always needed - Vendée Globe meteo adviser Christian Dumard annexes his prediction for the Vendée leaders passage of the ICTZ with a warning. Even with all of the tools and assimilated knowledge, no doubt enhanced during last winter and spring s lockdown learning phase in Europe, the passage of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone s unexpected squalls, prolonged calms under clouds, and variable, shifting winds - is always a time of high tension for Vendée Globe skippers.

Vendée Globe Day 70 morning update: The Equator and the Doldrums ahead

Vendée Globe © DR At 260 miles to the Equator this morning and in an E ly trade wind which has built and rotated right a little since the minor pinch point at Recife the leading trio of IMOCAs, Apivia, Bureau Vallée and SeaExplorer Yacht Club de Monaco have accelerated slightly returning average speeds of between 17.5 and 19 knots. Charlie Dalin, Louis Burton and Boris Herrmann have all gained slightly on fourth placed Thomas Ruyant who is, unfortunately, not able to match the leaders speed with no useable port foil. The 24 hours average speed for Ruyant is 13.9kts compared with between 15 and 16 for the leading trio.
