Melanie Mead had never heard of respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, until she was in the emergency room with her infant daughter who was struggling to breathe.
Little Ebony recovered eventually but her mum is urging pregnant women who are eligible to consider taking part in a trial of a new vaccine against the disease.
Eight-week-old Ebony Mead had to be fitted with a feeding tube after contracting RSV late last year.
The phase three trial is being run in locations across the world, with Brisbane’s Mater Hospital participating.
Ms Mead says both her children contracted RSV, with her two-year-old daughter Charlotte probably picking it up at daycare before passing it on to her sister.
