It’s hard to find an uncrowded trail during aspen season, but Golden Gate Canyon State Park is not the mob scene you find elsewhere. The segment of the Snowshoe Hare Trail connecting Rifleman Phillips Campground and Aspen Meadows Campground on the north end of the park is relatively uncrowded. It’s not as “aspeny” as the Fraser Meadow or Bootleg Bottom areas, but the solitude and shade make it a favorite of ours. And, it’s only a 40-minute drive from Boulder.
If midday heat is discouraging you from taking a walk, go out at sunrise or sunset. Take an easy stroll to a place with a view and watch the clouds shape-shift as colors modulate from pink to magenta to purple, from lemon to orange to gold.
