Returnee Expatriate Workers Staff Correspondent Staff Correspondent
About 47 percent of returnee expatriates in the country are facing difficulties in finding employment, 29 percent are facing financial problems and 21 percent are in debt.
A research report by International Organization for Migration (IOM), published yesterday, found the results.
The research, Rapid Assessment Round 2: Needs and Vulnerabilities of Internal and International Return Migrants in Bangladesh was conducted in August and September 2020 in high returnee-migrant districts in Bangladesh.
A total of 1,584 respondents took part, including 875 migrants who returned from abroad, and 709 internal returnee migrants, says a press release.
Among the respondents available for round two survey, the unemployment rate stood at 64 percent. Among the same respondents, unemployment rate was 74 percent in May to June 2020.

Expatriates Welfare Minister Imran Ahmad yesterday said they are taking measures and putting out new rules to ensure that migrant workers do not pay a price that would cripple them economically. We want to bring it down to an acceptable level, the minister said.
He was addressing a programme marking the launch of Returning Migrants Management of Information Systems (ReMiMIS), a digital database on returnee migrants, at the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) in the capital. The ministry with support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) launched the platform.

International Organisation for Migration will host a virtual concert for migrants tomorrow (Friday) to celebrate the International Migrants Day.
With over eight million Bangladeshi migrants working abroad, this virtual concert organised by IOM will enable them to connect and watch the concert from any part of the world, UN migration agency said in a press release today.
The Concert for Migrants will feature popular performers including Fakir Shahabuddin, Fahmida Nabi, SI Tutul, Sania Sultana Liza, Mizan Mahmud Razib, Xefer Rahman, Sahos Mostafiz, and Nowshad Ferdous (a Bangladeshi singer in South Korea). Palash Noor, the lead vocalist of the band Warfaze, will MC/host the concert.
