Germantown School Board reverses ban on critical race theory
After previously banning the teaching of critical race theory in its schools, the Germantown School Board on Monday reversed course and rescinded the ban on a vote of 6-1.
The board had previously banned the teaching of critical race theory. Board member Michael Loth cast the only dissenting vote in overturning the April 12 decision. He said he didn t like how critical race theory involves Marxism and how Marxism has failed in countries such as Venezuela. I work with three men that escaped Venezuela in the last 10 years, and their stories are not pretty. So when I say I don t want Marxism taught through CRT (critical race theory) in the school, that s what I mean. I m protecting your students, said Loth.
A group of parents is asking Germantown School Board President Bob Soderberg to resign.
In a letter, the group accused the school board of violating ethics and criticized the board for banning the teaching of critical race theory, not addressing racism in the district and declining academic performance. At this time, the actions of the board are hurting our students and educational programs of Germantown, the letter said.
Soderberg said in a phone interview April 26 the board would discuss critical race theory and other related topics at that night s board meeting. He said the board has learned a lot over the last two weeks about what critical race theory is.
