National correspondence at the christian broadcasting network. gentlem gentlemen, thank you both for being on here. let s talk through this a little bit. as the president makes this decision, he said he ll make it in the next hour and a half, by noon eastern time today, religious liberty is a focus for conservatives in particular. talk through how it might impact the president s decision in your view. well, i think the president will be looking for someone who is appreciative of the role that religion has played in american public life. how a proper understanding of the establishment clause allows that. looking for someone who recognizes that the religious freedom restoration act that congress enacted nearly unanimously some 25 years ago deserves to be enforced vigorously. i think all four candidates would measure up well, in terms of existing religious liberty protections. david, you and i talked about this, conservatives and evangelicals are rallying around
Very little incentive for democrats to do a deal, either because they re going to prompt, you know, primary challenges or because it strays from the message which they see as a very strong one, you know, which is this is a president and a congress that is so hard right, that is so out of the mainstream, that they need a democratic congress to be a check on them. so there s not a lot of incentive for democrats to deal. other than not shutting down the government. and that s the bind the democrats are in. because they don t want that outcome and they do have a commitment to keeping the government working. in a way that s probably stronger than some republicans. and so that s the bind for the democrats. i think mitch mcconnell, he doesn t want it shut down either. least, you know, his team would be in rough shape. all right. we have to leave the conversation there. julian, patrick healy, gentlemen, thank you. vladimir putin delivering a new year s message to president trump. coming
