Editor’s Note: Because of my bike injury, I can now write with only one hand for the next couple of months. To help out, my dear wife Jo Ann has graciously written today’s Skousen Cafe.
My husband Mark and I were married in the spring of 1973 Patriots Day, to be exact. An unpopular war was winding down, and a president was being impeached. Inflation was heating up and production was slowing down.
That summer, we were facing lettuce shortages, beef shortages and gas shortages. By winter, I was lining up early in the morning to fill our tank with gas sometimes waiting for two hours or more. By 10 a.m., most filling stations were empty for the day. And by spring, I was looking into the eyes of my newborn baby, wondering what her world would be like.

The Gene and Marlene Epstein Humanitarian Fund recently donated $20,000 to Bristol Township School District to support students and their families in need.
The district formed a Gene Epstein Donation Fund Committee of social workers, school counselors and nurses to distribute the funds. They identified families in need and connected them with local resources and referrals, and carefully assessed what amount of money was needed.
Thanks to the substantial donation, the school district has been able to provide for several families experiencing hardships who were in dire need of rent, food, clothing, auto maintenance, and much more.
How Markets Have Delivered More Economic Equality
People must still compete for resources in a socialist economy
In fact, the competition is intense. On the other hand, thanks to markets, basic necessities and even basic luxuries are now more more accessible than ever

I recently attended the Soho Forum debate between (democratic socialist) Ben Burgis and (libertarian) Gene Epstein on the question of whether capitalism or socialism would lead to the most prosperity, equality, and liberty.
Ben took it for granted that a socialist economy would be more equal, and Gene did not fight hard on this point; indeed, libertarians were once fond of saying, “While capitalism may yield the unequal distribution of wealth, socialism yields only the equal distribution of poverty.”
