Published May 10, 2021, 12:29 PM Commission on Human Rights Go out register and vote in the May 2022 elections and select candidates who will highlight the issue of gender stereotyping and will promote the equality among men and women, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) urged Filipinos on Monday, May 10. The CHR described gender stereotyping as a “traditional” view on the role of women and mothers, wherein they are the caretakers of household chores and they are responsible for meeting the needs of children. The Office of the High Commissioner of the United Nations Human Rights (OHC-UNHR) said: “Gender stereotyping refers to the practice of ascribing to an individual woman or man specific attributes, characteristics, or roles by reason only of her or his membership in the social group of women or men. Gender stereotyping is wrongful when it results in a violation or violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms.”

In her letter addressed to CHR Commissioner Karen Gomez-Dumpit, Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay appealed on behalf of Elizabeth Estilon, 41, and Enriqueta Guelas, 62, who were arrested on Dec. 24, 2020 following a raid in barangay Lalod, Bulusan, Sorsogon by members from 31st and 22nd Infantry Battalions of the Philippine Army. Both were charged with violation of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 and illegal possession of firearms and explosives.

Honor women for COVID-19 role; support women in fight vs human rights violations

(JANSEN ROMERO / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) In a statement issued on Monday, March 8, International Women’s Day, the CHR said: “We honor the many women who played crucial roles in addressing the ongoing pandemic in households, communities, hospitals, health facilities, and various public and private institutions. “We honor the women who continue to fight against impunity, call out persisting misogyny and demand accountability for human rights violations.” Through Commissioner Karen Gomez Dumpit, the CHR said this year’s celebration under the theme “Juana Laban sa Pandemya: Kaya” highlights the contributions of women and girls all over the world and stresses the importance of gender justice in a post-COVID-19 world.
