Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has lambasted fresh calls for convention by the party’s Secretary General Grezelder Jeffrey.
The party last year fired Jeffrey together with leader opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa, Jappie Mhango and others for allegedly calling for Peter Mutharika’s retirement and an early convention.
The fired members had to seek for court intervention for them to be reinstated.
Jeffrey wa Jeffrey has since re-ignited the debate after calling for the party convention again.
But in a statement, the party’s spokesperson Brown Mpinganjira has trashed the calls.
“The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its entire Leadership at all levels would like to disassociate itself from the contents of what has been described as a Press Statement dated 5th January 2021, released by Ms Gelzeder Jeffrey in which she is purporting to speak for the DPP.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has issued a statement disassociating itself from announcements made by its estranged Secretary General Gelzeder Jeffrey in which she had said she was speaking on behalf of the party.

Jeffrey, who have been reinstated by the court to the position from which she was fired in October, started exercising her powers and issued a statement on “steps towards the DPP National Convention”.
But DPP spokesperson Brown Mpinganjira says Jeffrey has “of late and by her own choice ceased to act on behalf of the party or promote its legitimate collective interests, but has, instead, chosen to serve the interests of individuals for reasons best known to her.”

Jeffrey, together with the party’s vice-president (South) and Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa; treasurer general Jappie Mhango; MP for Mulanje West Yusuf Nthenda and several others were fired by the party after leading a revolt against party President Peter Mutharika’s choice of Francis Kasaila as Leader of Opposition, undemocratically removing Nankhumwa.

DPP Secretary General, Gelzeder Jeffrey, has requested all party officials in the country to open to all new members who have shown willingness to join the party as the Convention is just nigh.
In her Press Statement released on 5th of January, 2021, the Party’s Chief Executive Officer has also reminded the party officials to abide by the law whenever discharging their duties.
“As Secretary General, I would like to welcome all new members who have joined the DPP, including those that have expressed interest to run for various leadership positions. As a democratic and progressive organization, the DPP believes that allowing as many people to join it as possible provides the party membership at all levels a broader choice base to select the best leaders from,” the Statement says which she has signed.
