Make some noise during a quiet city election: Go vote Our view Due to the pandemic, last year s city election was bumped from May to November.  Depending on how you look at it, the incumbents who won as expected either served exceptionally long first terms or will have shorter second terms. They certainly benefitted from turnout for a presidential election. On May 1, Abilene residents will vote for Places 1 and 2 on the City Council. Incumbent councilmember Shane Price faces Stephen Hunt while Place 2, open with the pending exit of Jack Rentz after one term, is a battle between Lynn Beard and Garrett Hubbard

Place 1, 2 Abilene City Council candidates step up for votes The races for Places 1 and 2 on the Abilene City Council are overshadowed by big questions. Those include the reliability of the city s water supply in the wake of the February winter storm, further street and infrastructure improvements and calls for accountability. COVID-19, along with loss of sales tax revenue, has taken a toll on the city s budget, while talk of a 2022 bond election, with some big-ticket items floated, occurs at a time when many residents only now are seeing the potential for basic financial recovery. Some candidates say younger or different representation is needed on the council, while others tout experience and leadership in city matters as a prerequisite.
