A man has died and at least one other person was wounded near the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Saturday by an attacker who reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”) before being arrested, French officials said.
The French helicopter carrier Dixmude has docked in Egypt and could start treating wounded children from Gaza later this week, Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu said on Tuesday, as Western powers look to ramp up efforts to aid the enclave. It is the first Western military ship to dock in Egypt since the conflict started and moored on Monday at al-Arish 50 km (31 miles) west of Gaza, now a hub for international aid for Gaza.
French President Emmanuel Macron vowed on Tuesday not to leave Israel isolated in its fight against Islamist militants, but warned against the risks of a regional conflict as he arrived in Israel. After meeting with families of French victims at Tel Aviv airport, Macron told President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem that France stood "shoulder to shoulder" with Israel and that the first objective should be to free hostages in Gaza. "I want you to be sure that you're not left alone in this war against terrorism," Macron said.
French officials are sounding the alarm and calling for immediate response as the bedbug outbreak in Paris is causing widespread concern ahead of the 2024 Olympics.
