Miles Gannett Melds Tradition And Tones On Solo Debut, Meridian

Article Contributed by IVPR | Published on Friday, March 5, 2021 Sometimes a song idea lands softly or inconspicuously, and sometimes it strikes a writer like a bolt of lightning, or in Miles Gannett’s case a string of mid-travel tornadic storms. That’s how Gannett ended up in Meridian, Mississippi, one night on a trip back from visiting his hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana. “When the weather got bad enough, we decided to pull off to the nearest city to find food and wait out the storm, and the closest city happened to be Meridian.” His pit stop turned to discovery, then to inspiration, and finally to song. “Meridian” the first track on Gannett’s debut solo album of the same name paints a waltzing, pedal-steel steeped picture of beauty in disrepair; of a city that was once grand and of the kindness of its current-day residents. Celebrate an early New Year's Eve with The Seldom Scene | Arts & Entertainment

Music fans around our area are very familiar with The Seldom Scene, as the popular American bluegrass band has been performing around Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., since it first formed in Bethesda, Md., back in 1971. The group has been instrumental in starting the progressive bluegrass movement as their shows often include bluegrass versions of country music, rock and even pop. On New Year’s Eve, The Seldom Scene will be playing at The Birchmere, in a show that starts at 7:30 p.m., due to restrictions that necessitate the venue close before midnight hits. Still, the band promises plenty of fun and it’s a great way to get ready for 2021.
