Opinion on police reform: Fair and impartial policing should rewarded

There are many reasons to be justifiably proud of Franklin County and the Columbus community. In reading a Feb. 23 article in The Dispatch, I realized with disappointment that policing is not one of them.
Our attention has been riveted of late by the tragic shootings of unarmed Black men Casey Goodson Jr. and Andre Hill. They are only symptoms, however, of a much deeper and long-lasting problem.
A recent study featured in this Dispatch article shows that we ranked 18th among the 100 largest counties nationwide in the rate of fatal law enforcement shootings. Ours is a much higher rate than that for Cuyahoga (ranked 56th) or Hamilton (ranked 61st) counties in Ohio and even for Chicago’s Cook County (ranked 64th), which is often derided for its shooting deaths.
