This Week in History: 1927, Health evangelist Dr. Frank McCoy dispenses fast advice

Article content Dr. Frank McCoy is forgotten today. But in the 1920s and 30s, the “health evangelist and dietician” was a big deal, providing medical advice to readers of 125 daily newspapers across North America, including The Vancouver Sun. On Feb. 12, 1927 the Sun brought him to town for a series of lectures in Vancouver and New Westminster. His arrival was played up on the front page, where there was a photo of McCoy shaking hands with the Sun’s owner Robert Cromie. We apologize, but this video has failed to load. Pressure mounting to remove homeless camps in Oceanside

Print Homelessness is hardly new in Oceanside, but there seems to be a growing intolerance of it. In recent weeks, longtime residents have repeatedly called for the city to roust the transients from their camps, stop feeding them free meals, and get them out of town. “No more Brother Benno’s,” resident Donna McGinty told the City Council at a recent meeting, referring to the soup kitchen near the city airport that has fed the homeless since 1983. “That has got to go.” She and other speakers said services like Brother Benno’s and the Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Oceanside only perpetuate homelessness and allow people to continue lives of crime and drug addiction.

Oceanside names interim police chief as recruitment process continues

OCEANSIDE    Capt. Manuel “Fred” Armijo will serve as interim leader of the Police Department when Chief Frank McCoy retires Dec. 28, Oceanside’s city manager’s officer announced Monday. Armijo, an Oceanside native who goes by the name Fred, has worked for the city’s police department since 1994. He started his career as a sworn police officer and worked through the ranks as sergeant and lieutenant before attaining the rank of captain in 2011. As captain, he has directed each of the three divisions of the department: Support Operations, Investigations and Patrol. “I’m excited to appoint Fred Armijo as interim police chief while the search is underway to fill the position permanently,” Oceanside City Manager Deanna Lorson said. “I’m fully confident in Capt. Armijo’s ability to lead the department professionally and with the utmost integrity, transparency and commitment through this time of transition.”
