Boat of The Week: How This Former Supply Vessel Was Transformed Into a Sleek 187-Foot Superyacht Explorer

New designs for conversion superyacht Project Phoenix

Following the increasing popularity of conversion superyachts, comes the newly announced Project Phoenix, a luxury yacht, which was originally converted from a 57-metre cable laying vessel. The commercial yacht Phoenix was launched in the Netherlands in 1968 at the EJ Smit & Zoon Shipyard after a 30 year career on the oceans. In the 1990’s the vessel was converted into a luxury yacht, known over the years as both Fils de Grace and Sir Arthur J. Gradually the yacht fell into disrepair and was due to undergo another rebuild in the early 2010’s, but the project fell through.   In the subsequent years since the last work was conducted, the yacht has been stripped back down to her bare steel hull. Today the project is being revitalised under the supervision of Ocean Independence, with ICT Shipyard in Turkey overseeing the extensive work needed.

CRN Shipyard on change and adaptation | SuperYacht Times

Written by 6 May 2021 | 10:30 (UTC) In 2018, CRN announced it had signed a contract to build a new 62-metre custom superyacht. Less than a year later the client withdrew when he decided he wanted to build bigger. Re-inventing a one-off project designed around a specific owner is never straightforward and can put the shipyard in a tight spot, but construction has continued with barely a pause and CRN is expected to launch her later this year. The original owner had commissioned Alessandro Pulina of Pulina Exclusive Interiors to develop a mostly white interior as a blank canvas or neutral backdrop for a colourful art collection. Those involved in the project likened the highly personal and pristine look to something out of Star Trek.

Project Gemini, model YN 19755, will accommodate as many as 12 guests between her six staterooms, including an 82-metre owner s stateroom to the fore of the main deck, with a private VIP cabin on the bridge deck and the further four cabins situated on the lower deck. The motor yacht features floor-to-ceiling windows and open bulwarks to maximise the flow between interior and exterior spaces.
