it is 5:00 on this tuesday morning. thanks for joining us. i m kristen sze. with i am eric thomas. a toddler is in critical one of five people wounded in a running gun battle outside a vallejo nail salon yesterday. amy hollyfield is live in vallejo with more. reporter: i just spoke with the nail salon owner she says the little girl is 2-years-old that it is her these her niece. i asked if she is doing okay. she said they don t know if she is going to recover she is listed in critical. investigators still at the scene with business owners trying to cleanup the mess from in. police are still recovering bullet from this. police are still recovering bullet casings. they got a call someone walked into tina s nail salon on s road and started shooting. the owner tells me that a woman appears to be the target. the a woman whose nails she does all the time. a man inside came out and shot back and chased a man or some men down the street. both parties were running and shootin
but it also brought down the carpet business next door. the carpet business has since been rebuilt. when i asked one of the people what was going on, they told me that they had suspicions that this wall might come down earlier. one of the residents from the area noticed the wall was leaning and notified the authorities and the fire department came out and looked at it and made a decision right there. reporter: and we take a look at some of the pictures of the fire i was talking about earlier. you can see how big the flames were. premature there i meant to tell you about it now but you can see how big the flames were. in fact as i mentioned earlier people at our job saw it coming into work and told us about it. we got over here as quickly as we can and the carpet business has been rebuilt. the question now it s not been occupied since that fire. you can t see it now but the roof is completely gone. so if you have a chance to look at it from above the building s completely
staffing. over 50% of our sentenced population is already doing their time outside of jail. so we have long embraced alternatives to incarceration but there s a point at which we can t make any more room. we re fortunate that we have some beds but we also have tremendously high costs in this county compared to the rest of the state and they re not reimbursing our actual costs. it s a state burden that we can t afford to take on. as the sheriff mentioned, santa clara county has about 1400 beds and alameda about 480. according to state and local population statistics, the san mateo sheriff said he s 20% over capacity. now sheriff smith says that if counties are forced to release inmates early to make room for state prisoners rate at which those former inmates will re-offend will go up and already, 70% of the women and men do re-offend. to put them closer to the services they need after their sentence to help them transition back to society but the sheriff says they want t
