Woman on Mission to Rededicate Hallowed Compton Cemetery Grounds, One Section at a Time

Updated on February 5, 2021 at 8:44 am NBCUniversal Media, LLC It s one of the oldest cemeteries in Los Angeles. Established in 1871, Woodlawn Cemetery in Compton holds history behind its gates that could very soon be lost. That s because until recently, its gates had been closed shut, the owners license revoked and property taxes nearing a million dollars left unpaid. But it was Mother s Day 2020 when a small light in the form of an angry daughter lit the path to what could potentially turn Woodlawn Cemetery into a national historical landmark. Celestina Bishop calls this cemetery home. She started coming when she was two years old with her grandmother, sometimes even sleeping on the cemetery grounds against the cold headstones of her mother and three sisters. In 1977, Bishop was the sole survivor of a bloodbath murder scene on a night of terror in Los Angeles.

The 1938–39 deplatforming of Father Coughlin.

This article is part of the Free Speech Project, a collaboration between Future Tense and the Tech, Law, & Security Program at American University Washington College of Law that examines the ways technology is influencing how we think about speech. On Nov. 20, 1938, WMCA in New York had enough of Father Charles E. Coughlin’s anti-Semitic bile. After a supposed homily entitled “Persecution: Jewish and Christian,” in which he denounced Jews in language that might have been lifted from Der Stürmer, an announcer broke in to distance the station from Coughlin’s talk. “Unfortunately, Father Coughlin has uttered many misstatements of fact,” he informed listeners. Donald Flamm, the president of WMCA, later pledged “not to permit a repetition” of Coughlin’s inflammatory remarks, words that were “calculated to stir up religious and racial hatred and dissension in this country.”

ServeWyoming Marks MLK Service Day With Virtual Tour, Donations

The wind blew cold and the participants in the annual Martin Luther King Day/Equality Day events remembered those less fortunate than themselves, even without the annual march and service at First United Methodist Church. Vicki Pollock was among those who donated coats for Project Homeless Connect in the parking lot between the Wyoming Food for Thought Project and the James Reeb Memorial Park. Pollock handed them to volunteer Janet deVries, whose SUV was already stuffed with coats collected during the day. The donations were part of the alternative to the annual march canceled due to COVID-19. But changes wrought by the pandemic spurred some creativity.
