As you probably know, he is the greatgreatgrandson of Theodore Roosevelt. We discussed beforehand whether there is a shorter word than greatgreatgrandson in english, but apparently there is not. So, that is so we are stuck with. The honor of having him here though, is much more founded in his skill in both his legal backgrounds and in his writing ability, he has produced several books on constitutional law, having served as a clerk to u. S. Supreme court under Justice David souter. He has written both novels and books on law. Tonight, there will be at least some discussion about his latest novel, entitled allegiance. It is about the incarceration of the japanese during the second world war. That is enough for me. Let me introduce professor Kermit Roosevelt to you. [applause] prof. Roosevelt iii thank you for that introduction. Thank you all for coming, it is a will pleasure to be here. Im going to talk about the significance of Theodore Roosevelts vision of the constitution and it will

Adolf hitler once said demoralize the enemy from within by surprise, terror, sabotage and assassination. This is the war of the future. He was right, for no one will ever forget those tactics he used more than half a century later on that fateful day in september, 2001. But what you may not know is that america was actually invaded on a foggy night in the summer of 1942. A group of nazi saboteurs landed here, right here on this beach, in eastern long island. Their mission, to strike at the heart of america with acts of sabotage. And just like the terrorists from 9 11, they had all lived in america and they all knew our country well. This is the story of the men who invaded our country and those who stopped them. The germans had threatened the United States long before 1942. In 1916 while world war i was raging in europe, americans felt safe. Imperial germany was waging an allout war against britain and france but the fighting was taking place more than 3,000 miles away across the atlan

Franklin roosevelt appoints him in the summer of 1941 aswhat eventually becomes the office of strategic services. Kind of a strange choice because donovan was a staunch republican, had run for governor of new york on an antiroosevelt, antinew deal platform. But he was also a man of irrepressible spirit, boundless optimism, full of ideas and, in a sense, hehe reflected the qualities of Franklin Roosevelt so he was named the head of our first spy service. Cspan as you know, they called him wild bill donovan. Tell us a wild story. Guest well, oneone of theone of the conclusions i reached about donovan was that he was a magnificent magnet for attracting talent. His oss attracted College President s, semanticists, philosophers, writers, journalists, photographers, actors, cameramen. Arthur goldberg had been an oss veteran, subsequently goes on the supreme court. Historian Arthur Schlesinger jr. Was with the oss. The french chef julia child was with the oss. I mean, look at this. Does this woman look ugly to you . Going there and look at our wedding picture. Look at her high school portrait. I mean, this woman had strawberry blonde, reddish hair, piercing blue eyes and ugly teeth, okay . And, you know, we do so much in this country to physically disparage people, whether they are female or male, if we dont like them. Theyve got their debts, they are bald, we dont like their glasses, we dont like their lipstick, we dont like the clothes they wear. I mean, weve got to be able to go back to that old adage of judging a person by the content of their character. Eleanor did magazine spreads for vogue. I mean, you know, do i hate the hairnet . Yes, i hate the hairnet. Arthur ground rules for all the pictures i did on eleanor . No hairnet pictures. But that doesnt mean shes ugly. So when i go into the classrooms who dont know her at all, whether they are kindergarten classrooms or third grade classrooms or, you know, innercity high schools, i say
