When the tax a $0.0175 per ounce tax on sugar-sweetened beverages distributed in the city, with at least 40 calories per 12 ounces passed the city council in 2018, the Sweetened Beverage Tax (SBT) continued to face some criticism from the Teamsters, some low-income communities who felt it disproportionately impacted their wallets and others, despite being championed by health officials who argue soda is one of the leading causes of the nation’s obesity epidemic, diabetes, and other significant health issues.

Senate Bill 5149 would establish a covered lives assessment for the purpose of funding the Foundational Public Health Services Account, moved to the Senate Ways and Means committee after a proposed substitute was added to the bill.

Delaware County plans to open a wellness center next month in Yeadon that will serve as its base of operations for coronavirus testing and vaccine distribution â and eventually will become the bricks-and-sticks home of the county health department.
âThe immediate use is going to be for COVID testing and vaccine distribution. But we hope in the not-so-distant future, when we open our health department in January 2022, that it will also be the hub for our health department, with possible satellite locations around the county,â said Dr. Monica Taylor, vice chair of the Delaware County Council.
In September, the County Council approved a five-year lease agreement with the Yeadon Shopping Center for the 1,235-square-foot space at 125 Chester Ave. The âworkhorse site,â set to open on Jan. 15, will be staffed with agency nurses and administrative workers until the county can hire its own health workers, according to Rosemarie Halt, Delcoâs COVID health policy
