City events mark National Bike Month

The city of Fort Wayne recognized National Bike Month on Tuesday by highlighting the growing community of cyclists in the area.
Local leadership has shown a commitment to making Fort Wayne more bicycle-friendly since City Council passed the 2010 Bike Fort Wayne Plan, a news release said. The three prongs of the plan are to build infrastructure for cycling as a safe mode of transportation; to educate citizens about the benefits of cycling; and to stimulate policy changes that support cycling.
In Fort Wayne, there are now 22 miles of bike routes, bike lanes and sharrows, which are parts of roads designated for cyclists. The city has also installed 68 new bike racks and replaced 17 bike racks. The Fort Wayne Regional Trails System includes 124 miles of trails, with about 93 of those miles within the city.

Project Mastodon took another step forward Monday – the result of a unanimous vote by the Fort Wayne Plan Commission.
Although the development s eventual occupant remains shrouded in secrecy, the Plan Commission approved the project s primary development plan and an amended written commitment that will outline acceptable uses for the site.
According to documents filed with the Department of Planning Services, Project Mastodon s primary development plan calls for construction of a 630,000-square-foot building on about 150 acres of land along U.S. 30 near Sweetwater Sound. Neighbors fight housing project

Neighbors of the proposed Cottages at St. Joe Center Road have vowed to continue to fight the housing project next to Fort Wayne Community Schools St. Joe Central Elementary School.
The development in the 6600 block of St. Joe Center Road seeks rezoning from single-family residential to multiple-family residential. Also sought is approval of a primary development plan for two single-family homes and five duplexes.
The applicant, Envision US LLC, Fort Wayne, also requests waivers of development standards pertaining to setbacks.
About three dozen nearby residents opposed the plan Monday night during a sometimes-contentious public hearing of the Fort Wayne Plan Commission.
