Former National Party leader Don Brash is on the hunt for funds to help gangsters read and write.
Dr Brash has become a trustee of the Ngaa Whaanau o Maangaru Education and Research Centre set up by the Waikato Mongrel Mob Kingdom chapter.
He says the chapter tried to interest tertiary institutions in providing educational help to its members, and when it got a negative reaction it went out on its own.
He s impressed with what the gang s leadership is trying to do. They are genuinely committed to helping their members get educated. Some have criminal records of course but a lot of them have educational problems. The leadership of the Mongrel Mob Kingdom said if we can help these guys - and they are predominantly guys - get some education, that improves their employment opportunities, that improves their families etc, how about it? I was happy to be involved, he says.

Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce has called for an independent inquiry into allegations levelled against Attorney General Christian Porter saying actively investigating the claims will help the minister avoid a trial by media.
In a lengthy social media post the Former National Party leader revealed the probe would offer a more dignified alternative to current dialogue.
He says he doesn t want Christian Porter sitting at the back of the chamber under the exit sign where he claims his colleagues have placed him.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has refused to endorse an inquiry.

Proponents of free speech are concerned at Twitter s abrupt suspension of tens of thousands of accounts in recent days which has now reached New Zealand.
They say many of these accounts were allowed to flourish for years and the swift change in approach has not been fairly applied.
But Twitter says: Given the violent events in Washington, DC, and increased risk of harm, we began permanently suspending thousands of accounts that were primarily dedicated to sharing QAnon content.
Last night, Bridges, tweeted: The suspension of NZ Twitter accounts is an overreaction. This isn t about whether anyone agrees with what any user was saying. It s about freedom of speech. And pushing views underground is more dangerous than letting them be out in the open for all to see.
