Teach Florida Thanks State Legislature For Expanding K-12 Scholarships By JLNJ Staff | April 29, 2021 (Courtesy of Teach Florida) Teach Florida, a nonpartisan organization advocating for educational funding opportunities for Florida nonpublic schools, thanks the state’s legislature for passing SB48/HB7045, a bill that will significantly increase the state’s income-based and special-needs scholarships for nonpublic school students. As of July 1, students from working- and middle-class families with income up to 375% of the federal poverty level will be eligible for scholarships to attend nonpublic schools at the same funding level as per student public school students receive from the state approximately $7,500 per student. Florida Lawmakers Approve Bill To Strengthen VPK Programs

Credit dcJohn / Flickr/https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/ Nearly a third of Florida’s more than 6,000 Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten providers are on probation and only about 53% of kids who attended kindergarten in 2019 were deemed ready for it. Rep. Erin Grall, R-Vero Beach, believes that has to change and her proposal on early learning and VPK is now on its way to the governor s desk. Florida’s VPK program was created in the early aughts in recognition that students need to be prepared for kindergarten and that early learning was critical to student success. The program is voluntary, and it was left to private providers to step in. Today, a little more than half of students attending the state’s providers are deemed ready for kindergarten.

New JAO principal

New JAO principal Amy Polacek The Jewish Academy of Orlando has announced that Amy Polacek will be the new principal of the school beginning June 1, 2021.  Polacek, the current director of Academics at JAO, joined the faculty in 2007 as a kindergarten teacher. After teaching at all grade levels, in 2018, she took on the additional role of Admissions coordinator, where she built relationships with prospective parents and shared her love of JAO. In 2019, Amy stepped away from the classroom and became the school s director of Academics, fostering a culture of academic excellence while supporting the school s mission-aligned, engaging, and challenging curriculum. Under her guidance, JAO enrolled its biggest entering-kindergarten class in years in 2020-2021, and the school s 2021-2022 enrollment period is already showing similar results Additionally, Polacek s tireless efforts were a contributing factor to the school s seamless transition to remote learning and successful managemen
