everybody. i agree with what the leaders are saying, there s a low chance that no deal will be reached, and the debt limit will be allowed to expire, but it s high stakes for everybody. president obama has a huge amount to win getting a big deal. he will go into the 2012 election saying i am the guy who can make washington work. i am the person who can lead even if he s flighting off his left flank. john boehner wants to be historical speaker. he doesn t want to be someone who sits in the chair for abhil. he wants to do a big deal. both parties kind of do see the need for a big deal even though they disagree on the particulars. eric cantor is playing an outside or inside game trying to position himself as the next speaker. that could backfire in his face. it s high stakes for everybody. there s not a situation where everybody can sit back and let it play out. everybody has a lot to win or lose. michael shearer, time m
