can do so, please stay at home, stay indoors. listen to that. stay at home, stay indoors. this morning kentucky governor andy beshear reported more than 20,000 people across his state are without power. at least one person has died as a result of the storm. the governor joins me now. governor beshear, thanks for taking the time this morning. thanks for having me. so, first of all, i wonder what the biggest threat to your state is right now in the midst of this storm and how are you handling it? well, we have two major threats, the first is bitterly cold temperatures. this morning windchill is up to negative 30 and some places across kentucky and you can get frostbite very quickly in that type of temperature. it s going to stay in the, you know, negatives with windchill for the next couple of days. the second piece is the roads continue to be treacherous. it s not as much of the flash freezing which we were able to
canceled all flights. you can see why. over 70 million americans are experiencing below freezing temperatures, and that includes the entire state of texas, and even if you are not freezing, it s bad news if you are waiting on any last-minute christmas gifts to arrive. amazon, the u.s. post office, the u.p.s., fedex, all warning that the storm has hit major shipping hubs nationwide, and deliveries will be delayed. so we have cnn s polo sandoval. last time i saw you, you were walking out of the blizzard. we could barely even see you. this time, you re still standing right in the thick of it. how has it been over the last hours since we spoke? reporter: you know, kristen, i m glad you showed our viewers that triple threat that folks here have been facing. you have the flooding, you have the wind, you have the flash freezing. that is why this is an extraordinary storm that s hitting buffalo. it snows in buffalo, right?
plunging 33 degrees. cheyenne, wyoming. nyc is in the storm s icy grip. it was 58 this morning in manhattan. we ve fallen 37 degrees. overnight it could get as low as 5. the state s governor declaring a state of emergency. major highways shutdown for 150 miles. wind chills are going to be absolutely bone chilling. that s why this is a life threatening event. that s what we re bracing for. trevor, a new warning from officials in the northeast. reporter: yeah, officials are concerned about a flash freezing. very dangerous conditions on the road. not to mention we could have 60 mile an hour wind gusts through tomorrow. that could mean even more power outages overnight and in to christmas eve, whit. trevor, thank you. and that wintry mix leaving millions stranded at the nation s airports during one of
when it gets the term a weather bomb, ere pressure becomes very stormy very quickly. the winds around that help push cold air widely. back to wednesday, calgary had its coldest december day in 26 years, 28 celsius. that cold air will sweep across canada and into a good part of central and eastern us. freezing anything which has fallen in terms of rain so flash freezing is a big issue but temperatures dropping by day and night. even in the south, texas and florida and the bahamas, some night temperatures could be 10 celsius. this is only part of the issue because with the weather bomb you get strong winds. we expect life threatening wind chill with temperatures as low as -70 chill with temperatures as low as 70 fahrenheit. five minutes will cost frostbite and there is no
