San Bernardino County app cracks down on illegal fireworks

Print San Bernardino County fire officials are spreading the word about a new system for reporting illegal fireworks less than a month after an explosion in Ontario left two dead and caused more than $3 million in damage. Residents can anonymously report the use and sales of illegal fireworks through an online portal that can help fire officials better track activities and identify culprits, according to county Fire Marshal Mike Horton. Reports collected through the app will go into a database that is viewable by fire and law enforcement agencies, he said. Those reports will be mapped and can be used to direct patrols to heavy-use areas.

Juvenile arrested in fire that destroyed vacant West Des Moines building

Des Moines Register An arrest was made Friday in connection with a fire that destroyed a vacant West Des Moines office building last month. A 17-year-old male has been charged with second-degree arson, a Class C felony, following a physical examination of the fire scene and leads being developed by investigators, according to a Friday news release from the West Des Moines Police Department. The department s public information officer Sgt. Jason Bryan did not identify the suspect and said he could not give more details on the ongoing investigation. No further charges are expected to be filed, he said. At approximately 3:58 p.m. on Nov. 2, West Des Moines firefighters were notified of the fire at 1247 8th St. Upon arrival, they encountered heavy smoke emanating from inside (the building) and flames beginning to show, the news release said. A restaurant located 10 feet away from the south side of the building was evacuated.
