A 10-year-old boy is recovering from smoke inhalation and a Virginia family is mourning their dogs after a house fire that claimed the pets’ lives.
The family is as infused with gratitude as they are with grief: The canines’ last living act was to jump on the sleeping boy as he slumbered alone in the family home, waking him up so that he could escape the flames.
“They both died heroes basically,” Dinwiddie Fire Chief Dennis Hale of Dinwiddie told WTVR-TV of the pair of brindle pitbulls.
Two dogs jumped on a 10-year-old Virginia boy to wake him, allowing him to escape a fire that was engulfing his home, only to perish in the flames themselves.
