FinTech startups frustrated with glacial pace of Canada’s open banking consultations
Sue Britton was feeling “super optimistic” when the Advisory Committee on Open Banking sent out a package for phase-two consultation participants with an outline of the workshops it wanted to hold and its recommendations for an eventual framework.
“It was very exciting to see such a focus on both the consumer and the small business and innovation,” she said. “To see the purpose was to not only protect the consumers but give them access to innovative products in a safe way, I thought that was super exciting.”
Roughly four months and one federal budget later, there’s a big asterisk to her optimism.

There are more than 600 fintech companies in Canada, according to a CFA Montreal report, and new Canadian fintech companies are increasingly involved with verticals such as insurance, lending, and dabbling with blockchain and various forms of cryptocurrency.
Supporting organizations include the Canadian Blockchain Association for Women, the FinTech Growth Syndicate, the Canadian Prepaid Providers Organization, the WIT Network, and the Canadian Blockchain Consortium. Organizers will be reaching out to Canada’s digital community to nominate women innovators and influencers with more than two years of experience in the burgeoning fintech and blockchain ecosystem.

“Celebrating the successes of women in this field
may inspire other women to consider careers in FinTech and Blockchain,” says Annan. “Help us open doors for future generations by nominating either yourself or a colleague for this special recognition.”
Nominations are open to qualifying women across all sectors, especially in financial services, law, education, and advisory services, as well as to entrepreneurs.
The deadline for nominations is April 16, 2021

Honourees will be acknowledged during an interactive celebration featuring a video showcase of the top women’s accomplishments, a panel discussion exploring fintech and blockchain challenges, and sponsored breakout rooms.
