quote, worst case scenario for hundreds of thousands of civilians if they are unable to receive humanitarian aid. the agency says the city s residents have, quote, endured a weeks-long life and death nightmare and are facing shortages of field, water and medicine. food, water and medicine. and an american journalist has died and at least two others hurt after russian forces fired on them in irpin just outside to have the nation s capital. filmmaker brent renaud was 50 years old. the white house has condemned the attack. and now we go back to my co-anchor, benjamin hall, who is live in ukraine s capital of kyiv. benjamin. benjamin: yeah, hi, molly. just to bring you back here to kyiv and to tell you what s happening, we continue to hear on three sides some heavy shelling. it sounds as if it s to the east, to the north and the northwest, and those are the three directions that vladimir putin s e forces are descending on this city from. as we ve been saying for a few
award-winning journalist who died here doing what he has done for so many years, and that is to bring the story to the people caught up in this conflict to you, the viewers at home. it is such an important job and a reminder that people are out here risking their lives to do that. he knew what he was doing, he was experienced, but still a tragic day, and our thoughts go out to his family. and the other story today, the attack on the western base near lviv. significant because it appears an attempt to cut off the supply lines which are flowing so freely and bringing in weapons to the ukrainian army. whether or not we think that is going to change things on the ground, whether or not we think the russians will pick up that attack, we don t know. i do want to bring back in greg palkot who is near the site of that attack this morning to see what he can tell us, to see how he thinks this is going to impact the war moving forward. greg? reporter: benjamin, yeah, it could be seen as a bit o
brent s long-time friends, kristof. thank you for coming in, kristof. i m glad you can tell us a little bit about brent. what have you learned so far today, kristof? i woke up this morning to the news that brent, long-time best friend, incredible colleague, the best war journalist i think ever existed, finding out about his passing. brent had this ability to go anywhere, get any story, listen and communicate what was happening to people that others wouldn t otherwise see it. and it is a devastating loss to journalism today. what do you know about what he was doing with his colleagues in ukraine? was he working on a documentary? yeah, he was working on a documentary about refugees. it was a story he was doing
around the world, and when the crisis in ukraine happened, brent was on the plane the next day. and he was covering a story about refugees coming out of kyiv into poland and that s what we know. i remember you worked with him i remember one that occupied wall street about a decade ago. he was working on advice for others. what stood out to you most about his style of filmmaking? what made him so special? as i said, we went to dupont together about ten years ago doing a story about guns being smuggled in the u.s. across the border. what i said when we accepted our reward was, the only thing bigger than brent s balls are his heart. and i stand by that. that s what kind of journalist he was. he could get into any location.
kyiv. benjamin: it is a tragic day because russian forces continue their march across this country because they continue besieging towns and cities leaving hundreds of thousands without water, food, electricity and medicine. and because the indiscriminate bombing of civilians continues. also a tragic day, because as you said, brent renaud, an american journalist, 50 years old, died today not far from where we are. brent was 50 years old, he was an experienced journalist. he he won a pea body award, and he was here to tell the story of the civilians who are caught up in this battle. what we know so far is that he was in the town of irpin, as i said, about 15 miles from here. he had passed through a ukrainian checkpoint. the lines are quite fluid. he approached a russian checkpoint at which point they opened fire on him. as the car turned to turn around, brent was hit in the neck. he died on the scene.
