the whole country. then, an active campaign of repression. i have been speaking with intelligence officials, i have been speaking with locals here, with local commanders, and the reason they are fighting so hard, and they are fighting hard, is because they know what s at stake if they lose. they not only lose their democracy, but they completely anticipate that there will be a campaign of repression carried out against them. u.s. officials have been warning about this, and u.s. officials said that they have drawn up kill lists, and ukrainians believe them. they believe that what would follow a loss of this country to vladimir putin would be a campaign of human rights abuses, and world crimes, potentially carried out by a force called the rose gardenia. they are the ones to watch out for. they will be the ones enforcing a crackdown, and trying to
attack. there was no justification for them attacking civilians with these kinds of weapons. these are barred. these kinds of weapons represent war crimes. it is very evident that the russians are attacking civilians, intentionally attacking civilians. you do have to do the investigation. and the evidence is there. and the evidence is being collected. but, yes, in my, it s a clear war crime. it is a legal question. it does have to be investigated. what is your concern at this point your biggest concern? my concern is our ability to get weapons, ammunition to the ukrainians. ukrainians are fighting hard,
he says every square in ukraine right now should be called freedom square. i m joined now by cnn s anchor christiane amanpour. sounded like the translator was choking up because there was so much emotion there. well, i think you re absolutely right. you know, he said i can t even say good morning, good evening, good afternoon to you all because it is not good for anybody in ukraine. although we re fighting hard, everyday brings more deaths. and again, he raised this unbelievable global specter. this is not justified, he says, for ukraine or by brave ukrainians, but it is for the entire world, particularly the free world and particularly for europe. and he used this address here at the european parliament actually obviously in brussels to ask for immediate accession to the eu. now, it s unlikely that he will get that, but this was a point that he absolutely made. and let me say i spoke to the french finance minister today. and they have been working along
forces down out of another town, they are trying to move south from. that s the effort on going. but it s an open question. ukrainians are fighting hard, fighting hard in mariupol and the donbas region, they are not giving up. and zelenskyy has been clear. when he negotiates, it s for all of ukraine. he wants the sovereignty of the ukrainian territory and that s his right, absolute right as president of the country to do so. sandra: back to what we heard a moment ago when he took questions from reporters at the white house, saying that putin seems to be self-isolated. he did not want to put too much stock into that but some indication he has fired or put under house arrest some of his advisors. how closely are we watching vladimir putin, do we have a line to him, does the president wants to speak to him, would he, what is our next move dealing
implications of this, mr. chairman? well, clearly this is not going the way that vladimir putin thought it would go. you know, even our intelligence early on said that he thought that ukraine would have been overwhelmed in three days. now we re going on day 15, and they are still fighting, and they re fighting hard, which does not surprise me. i was in ukraine just a few days before the attack took place, and one of the things i was sure of was that the ukrainian people would fight. and so he is frustrated, and a number of individuals lives of his military that have been killed and tanks and planes shot down. but he s getting dangerously close to, i think, an issue that he doesn t want to have to deal with, and that is going after a nato ally.
