22 hours after the first mininger in stepped off the fenix capsule, the 70-day saga of the 33 trapped miners is over. 54-year-old luis urzua, the supervisor. as the last man out, he gets the world record for being underground and surviving. here is the moment of his rescue. [ cheers and applause ]
the wheels of the capsule. it s still a pretty precarious situation, isn t it. it s a narrow shot, not even straight. rocks could fall and jam things up f. describe the very real dangers right now amid the celebratory turn as well. reporter: right. we totally expect it. there s no reason to rush it. we have to pull it out quickly. they re going to give it a check each time it comes up and give it maintenance just like your car for an important trip. nothing unexpected. they were doing some maintenance, also going to the capsule because when these men come down they have video hooked up, oxygen. they want to make sure everything is perfect. we ll be seeing more of that over the next roughly 27 more hours. this will go on until sometime thursday morning or early thursday afternoon.
because of a mining accident as well. this guy has obviously given a lot to mining. it was just by happenstance he was there. he wanted to test drive a new truck. took the truck into the mine and found himself down there in the collapse. as they prep this capsule to send it back down again, the trip down takes about 11 or 12 minutes and then they will probably be in there for another 15 or so as they get mario gomez prepped and ready to go and another 12-minute ride back up to the surface. about a half hour from now we expect him to come back up. what about going back down into the mines. we ve heard the bolivian miner say that s it. i m giving up mining. do you think a good number of miners will say perhaps under pressure from their families say that s it. i m done with mining. i ll find another way to make money.
