The time Irish armies kept invading Canada

Article content In the roughly four centuries since first contact, only three groups have ever set out to invade and seize the lands called Canada: The British (who did it in 1759), the Americans (who failed twice), and the Irish Republican Army. Not the same IRA whose name would become a byword for terrorism in the 20th century, but an actual honest-to-goodness army of Irishmen bent on fighting pitched battles to conquer and subjugate the people of Canada. To mark St. Patrick’s Day, enjoy this repost of our 2017 article on the exceedingly bizarre events that collectively formed the low point of Canada-Irish relations.

Calls for Matchette Road name change

WINDSOR, ONT. Windsor’s mayor says he wants to correct the spelling of a west Windsor and LaSalle road to properly represent the man it’s named after. Mayor Drew Dilkens says he’s going to ask Windsor city council to correct the spelling of Matchette Road to reflect the correct and intended name to Matchett Road, according to his post on social media on Thursday. I m going to ask City Council to correct the spelling of the current Matchette Road to reflect the correct and intended name to Matchett Road. Our research shows the name was mysteriously changed sometime in the 1940 s but it s clear the road was named after Alfred Matchett.
