The Stairway to Heaven is popular with hikers and a heavily photographed hike on Instagram. Now, the Haiku Stairs could be removed.
It’s one of Hawaii’s most infamous hikes: 3,922 steps across the steep Ko olau mountains in Oahu.
Hiking the Haiku Stairs which are in disrepair and dangerous is illegal and considered trespassing.
It comes with a $1,000 fee if you’re caught, but that hasn’t stopped almost anyone with an Instagram account from visiting the popular site.
Previously, the city, under then-Mayor Kirk Caldwell, had planned to turn the Haiku Stairs into a destination with paid public access. But now, they may be removed altogether.
