BRUNSWICK, Ohio Did you know that April is National Volunteer Month? I was born into a family of volunteers, so that attracted my attention.
I have always said that I didn’t have much money to donate, but I could donate my time. It’s led to some really wonderful, sometimes eye-opening experiences.
There are so many great ways to volunteer your time, a monetary donation or both. Each week, there’s almost always a chance to read about what’s available to us.

BRUNSWICK, Ohio – Everything old is new again. That seems to wrap up the past month or so for me, thanks to the telephone for the Brunswick Area Historical Society.
About a week ago, the phone rang. It was Marjorie Hay Thompson calling from Virginia and she had just discovered a packet of papers among items from her parents, Walter and Twyla Hay. They were marked “Important church papers passed down to Twyla Hay.”
Walter and Twyla were very involved at First Christian Church until they passed away. Marji wondered if the historical society was interested. I explained we had an amazing collection from the church, which was sold to Tri-C last year, ending the congregation’s 184 years in Brunswick.

MEDINA, Ohio – There is no shortage of super stars in Medina County when it comes to community leadership. When Leadership Medina County sought nominees for its annual excellence in leadership awards, organizers realized it was going to be a tough job.
Because of crowd restrictions, they also had to come up with an innovative way to hold the ceremony. Executive Director Colleen Rice and co-host Sharon Danko went live online to read and talk about the long list of nominees and their accomplishments.
Prior to the broadcast, the annual dinner was held – as participants were encouraged to pick up their dinner and drinks and take them home to enjoy. The semifinalists were also watching from their homes with video links so that the winners could be seen accepting the awards.

“I’ve loved every minute,” she said.
But those minutes are winding down. After six years at the non-profit’s helm, Hinkle has decided that the organization is healthy and it is time for her to retire. She will be stepping down Dec. 31.
