Essential Politics: Support for the death penalty dropped for 2 decades. Now it's hit a plateau

Americans' support for the death penalty fell for decades, then plateaued. How do do those changes compare to attitude shifts on abortion and LGBTQ rights?

TimesOC: Orange County mobilizes to catch killer of 6-year-old boy

Good morning and welcome to the TimesOC newsletter. It’s Friday, May 28. I’m Ben Brazil, bringing you the latest roundup of Orange County news and events. The county has spent the last week collectively reeling from the killing of a 6-year-old boy. Aiden Leos was shot to death last Friday on the 55 Freeway in Orange while being driven to kindergarten by his mother in what has been described as a road rage incident. With Leos’ killer still on the loose, the county has mobilized to offer a reward of $310,000 to anyone who offers information that leads to the arrest of the shooter. Orange County Supervisors Don Wagner and Katrina Foley have donated $50,000 each from their offices’ budgets to the effort. Reporter Faith Pinho wrote that an anonymous donor has provided another $50,000, and several Orange County businesses have also donated.

Essential Politics: Democrats close ranks behind Newsom

The past year has shaken the California Democratic Party, the state’s dominant political organization that has run the table on statewide races for more than 15 years. It lost three congressional seats in last November’s election that Democrats had seized from Republicans just two years earlier. Voters rejected a half-dozen statewide 2020 ballot measures the party had endorsed, including sweeping changes to property taxes and criminal justice. And most troubling: Its standard-bearer, Gov.

Essential California: USC's abuse payouts anger some

Monday, May 3. I’m Shelby Grad. USC’s $1.1 billion in settlements to about 17,000 former patients of gynecologist George Tyndall was the largest sex-abuse payout in education history. But the payouts vary widely. Women who chose to join a federal class-action suit received far less than those who gambled on individual suits. The results have left some victims exuberant and others feeling cheated. As Matt Hamilton and Harriet Ryan reported, the bitterness comes at what many hoped would be a moment of healing and justice. And the situation is unusual. Advertisement “I’m really struggling to think of a situation where the highest paid members . were 10 times higher than a very similar settlement that was reached in the same 12- to 24-month period,” said Loyola Law School professor Adam Zimmerman, who teaches complex litigation and served as counsel to the special master for the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund.
