Trading under the African Continental Free Trade Area started in earnest on 1 January 2021. This follows a five- and half-year period since negotiations were launched on 15 June 2015. Tough negotiations were followed by signing of the Agreement on 21 March 2018, entry into force on 30 May 2019 and commencement of trading on 1 January 2021.

The AfCFTA Start of Trading webinar is being organised to celebrate a moment in Africa’s history where a great stride in continental integration is being witnessed. The webinar will be the first of a series of events that will take place virtually and physically over the next few weeks to mark this important occasion in Africa’s fulfilment of the Organisation for African Unity (OAU) founding fathers’ dream of a truly united and integrated continent.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: 21-22 December 2020: Three (3) outstanding education innovations were awarded grants of USD 60,000, 40,000 and 20,000 at the Innovating Education in Africa Pitch Event 2020. The grants will be used to undertake pilot projects in collaboration with African Union Member States. The innovations included: BAG - Building A Generation - A gamified platform that offers real-time access to experience-based learning for University students; Learnable - Teaching assistant that allows teachers to compose and distribute lessons via a dedicated mobile app and WhatsApp; Chalkboard Education - A remote teaching and learning toolkit aimed to help teachers and parents during the COVID-19 crisis.
Although she misses school, the 18-year-old is content helping her father and learning carpentry.
“Many people wonder why I spend a lot of time in the sun scrubbing, cutting, nailing and painting chairs, tables and the beds we make. It helps me remain sharp,” she says.
“I love to explore new things.
“Carpenters have to use many mathematical skills which include basic addition, subtraction and trigonometry which apply in school. Furthermore, it touches lives every day since without carpentry, we would not have homes and many buildings and I am happy to be part of change,” she adds.
Adhiambo’s favourite subject is history but she is passionate about learning new things, a factor that made her try her hands on carpentry.
