(John Whaley) FAIRFIELD, CT Less than a week after McKinley Elementary students encountered vandalism outside their school, they received a much different surprise messages of kindness and unity, artistically rendered along the school sidewalks. Students discovered Tuesday on the school s front walkway chalk drawings of hearts, rainbows and flowers, and words encouraging them to be a light in the darkness and reminding them there is unity in our diversity. The happy surprise was the result of a collaboration between several Fairfield high school and middle school groups. The organizations came together after graffiti that said United States of China and Biden For Socialism was reported to police Jan. 13 on sidewalks near the school and a snow mound in the parking lot.

Officials believe in-school transmission caused COVID spike in Fairfield school FacebookTwitterEmail File photo of Fairfield Woods Middle School.Genevieve Reilly / Genevieve Reilly FAIRFIELD School officials said they believe that a recent spike in COVID-19 cases at Fairfield Woods Middle School was because someone came to school while contagious. “While many schools have experienced cases and quarantines among staff and students since the winter break, a recent cluster of cases at Fairfield Woods MS appear to likely be the result of in-school transmission,” Sands Cleary, Fairfield’s health director, said in a message to families this week. “An undiagnosed case was present at the school during their infectious period and later became symptomatic at school.”

School district officials were concerned about the spike in cases and quarantines among students and staff, according to a message sent Wednesday to parents. When Wednesday morning brought more cases, students were moved out of the seventh-grade wing to begin cleaning and disinfecting. These cases significantly impact the school s ability to function in a safe and effective manner, said the message, attributed to Superintendent Mike Cummings and COVID-19 Health and Safety Compliance Liaison Angelus Papageorge.

There were 10 positive cases and 21 people in quarantine from the Fairfield Woods Middle School community as of mid-day Wednesday, officials said. Districtwide, there 48 positive cases and 208 students and staff in quarantine, including those at Fairfield Woods, according to district’s numbers on Tuesday. In a message to families and staff, officials said they are concerned about the increase in positive cases and quarantines among students and staff at Fairfield Woods this week.
