Why Is It So Sad When Characters in Christmas Movies Sing in Unison?

According to one of the many oft-quoted lines in the modern holiday classic
Elf, the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. It is also, for some reason, one of the best ways to reduce me to tears.
I’m not, in general, a big movie crier. Personally, I prefer to save my irrational tears for drunk crying on the bathroom floor of clubs or weeping quietly on the subway. But give me a bunch of characters in a Christmas movie coming together to sing in unison at a climactic point in the film, and the tears flow forth.
