The Florida Everglades has a special meaning for different people. For tourists, Everglades National Park is a thrilling airboat ride through unforgettable wilderness. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Everglades is a great place to spot birds, alligators and our very own
charismatic megafauna, the Florida manatee. For 8 million Floridians, the Everglades is water to drink. And for the Miccosukee and Seminole nations, the Everglades is home.

Former Congressman Francis Rooney received the highest honor the Conservancy of Southwest Florida awards Wednesday.
Rooney was presented with the “Eagle Award,” recognizing his work on science-based conservation priorities, including the Everglades Restoration Plan. He said there is still work to do.
“The offshore water quality, the algae blooms, red tide, dead zones, we have a reef off Marco Pass, and it was hypoxic at 71 feet deep,” Roney said. “We have a lot of work to do in dead zones.”
Rooney’s top congressional priorities included extending the moratorium on offshore drilling and fully funding projects in the Everglades Restoration Plan to improve our water quality.
