In June 2020, government announced that small and medium size enterprises in agro processing, manufacturing and tourism sectors would receive about Shs1 trillion to support them during the lockdown.  The money was supposed to be channelled to eligible beneficiaries through the Uganda Development Bank (UDB).  However, many businesses have never received the money. In January, UDB said it had disbursed up to Shs242b to vital sectors of the economy in 2020.

Ugandan Shippers shun Naivasha depot

Daily Monitor Thursday February 11 2021 Containers. President Museveni accompanied by senior Kenyan and Ugandan government officials tour parts of Mombasa port in 2019 as containers await clearing. PHOTO/FILE Summary From Naivasha to Kampala costs $1,700 (Shs6.2m) - $1,850 (Shs6.8m) both based on round trip (with empty container return). For an empty container return via Naivasha to Mombasa, there is an additional last mile cost in Mombasa to teack the empty container from the SGR to the nominated depot. Advertisement Government of Kenya allocated Uganda 20 hectares of land to build an inland container port at Naivasha. This ICD was aimed at bringing Mombasa port closer to Uganda as Kenya’s standard gauge railway will be used to bring the containers from Mombasa port to Naivasha where they will be cleared from by Ugandan traders.

Internet shutdown stalls businesses, government agencies

Daily Monitor Tuesday January 19 2021 Summary In an earlier interview last week, Mr Peter Kawumi, the chairperson of Financial Technology and Service Providers Association, told Daily Monitor  that on a daily basis 300 million transactions are carried out by means of Fintech system alone in the country. Advertisement The Internet shutdown that started on January 13 has caused huge losses as businesses, government agencies, organisations and web-based operations such as e-tax payments were disrupted for five days.   The State action has been described as inconsiderate due to the modern ways of conducting business through e-commerce.  On the eve of the election, government shut down Internet citing security reasons during the elections for President and Members of Parliament.
