OGUNQUIT, Maine The lifeguard roster at Ogunquit Ocean Rescue was quite a bit shorter on Friday than it had been at the beginning of the week, after a decision by Interim Town Manager Matthew Buttrick triggered a mass resignation.
At least eight lifeguards, including all three assistant captains, quit their jobs in protest of Buttrick s decision to take away John Paul J.P. Argenti s title as lifeguard captain and give it to newly hired Ogunquit Fire Chief Russell Osgood.
Buttrick said his decision wasn t meant to be a demotion for Argenti, whose job is seasonal. Rather, the change aimed to streamline the reporting relationships among town personnel, so Argenti would continue managing the seasonal roster of lifeguards while reporting up through Osgood, who works year-round.
