Editorial: The unofficial start of summer

For so many people, the weeks from the Victoria Day long weekend to the Labour Day long weekend are our summer, with sunny days, heat, lots of daylight and plenty of activities outdoors.  And for the second straight year, our unofficial start to summer is marred by uncertainty, with questions about what we can and can’t do. The limitations are slated to be eased starting in late May, but they won’t be all gone. Fortunately, there’s still a lot to do in the Estevan area.   There are the obvious attractions that are big drawing cards for the city. The Woodlawn Regional Park has steadily grown the number of amenities over the years, with two campgrounds, a golf course and numerous ways to spend your time in the great outdoors.

Wildland fire occurred by Benson on Sunday

He did a great job with not hesitating at that time to get ourselves on the road as there s a fair travel distance there to get to the location. Crews were able to bring it under control before it got to any neighbouring properties or any other assets such as vehicles or farm machinery. We were able to keep it small and manageable, said Estevan Fire Chief Dale Feser. Firefighters successfully suppressed the fire without any injuries or loss of property. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It appears that everybody is trying to do their best there to burn safely, Feser said.

Women of Estevan: Story of the biggest love for the Energy City

As a part of our Women of Estevan special, the Mercury spoke to Melodye Pierson, Estevan s biggest fan, about her love for the city and the ways she chose to show this love. Melodye s parents met during the Second World War, when her father, born at the Taylorton mine, was overseas. He brought his young wife, who was six months pregnant, from England and they settled in his hometown. Estevan wasn t as developed back then, but the family stayed to make it better for themselves and their children. There wasn t much in Estevan then, and I always said to (my mom), I m surprised you didn t get back on the train. And, and she said, I loved him. It couldn t be any simpler than that, recalled Melodye.
