The child was awake and alert when they were found by an Essex County Sheriff's Office officer and taken to University Hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ Essex County sheriff s officers have apprehended a Newark man who was allegedly involved in a high-speed chase and shooting near Irvington Park, authorities said.
Others involved in Tuesday evening s chase remain at large, according to a statement from Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura.
Officers were patrolling the area of Olson Place and Lyons Avenue in Irvington, when they saw a black Dodge Charger and a silver Nissan Altima in a high-speed chase near the park s entrance.
Dump truck hits sheriff’s SUV on I-280 shoulder as officer assisted driver of disabled mini-van

An on-duty Essex County Sheriff’s Officer was injured Monday morning after his SUV was rear-ended by a dump truck along the shoulder of Interstate 280, officials said.
The sheriff’s officer had just aided a the driver of a disabled mini-van and returned to his vehicle when the dump truck struck the SUV from behind at around 4:50 a.m. near exit 8A in West Orange, Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura said.
The sheriff’s officer was taken to University Hospital in Newark to be checked for neck and back pain after the air bags deployed. He was since been released, according to Fontoura.
