Naxxar high-rise withdrawn, but new plans are in the offing
Plans for an imposing 10-storey block in the car park of the former Naxxar trade fair grounds have been scrapped, after the developers withdrew the application

MaltaToday is informed that the new application does not foresee the use of the Floor Area Ratio mechanism, which allows higher buildings double the height limited by the local plan if half the area is allocated for open spaces. During a November 2020 meeting, developer Jean Borg had warned that his group would either get a Tigné-style project, or face having to “build the whole area. with a horrid building looking like a government housing estate”

Joseph Mary Genuis (1934-1970) was one of the 20th-century sculptors that Malta lost at a very young age. His oeuvre displays a very modernist approach that shows that he was very aware of the global art world, especially the European one.
His friendship with fellow sculptors Josef Kalleya − one of the two fathers of Maltese modernism − and Toni Pace and with painter Frank Baldacchino, coupled with their frequent discussions on art and literature, provided the young sculptor with ample thematic and stylistic direction.

The death at a very young age of Anton Inglott (1915-1945) deprived Maltese modernism of what would have been a leading protagonist, just on the eve of its birth. His ill-health conditioned most of his life.

His prodigiously fast artistic maturity could have been due to a self-awareness that fate had bestowed upon him a short time frame in which he could express himself artistically. His very introspective output reflected this in his choice of restrained, almost monochromatic, palette that radiates an otherworldly aura of sobriety, asceticism and spirituality.
