ATHENS, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) The atmosphere is rather gloomy as last-minute shoppers fill Athens central market Varvakeios and the neighboring streets before New Year s Eve, when Greeks traditionally exchange gifts. Several shops remain closed, and only a few people carry bags, with most pedestrians sticking to just window-shopping.
As Greek households incomes have been reduced dramatically this year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy and uncertainty remains, most citizens cut back on holiday shopping by 35-50 percent compared to 2019, according to surveys. The market here in the city center has been affected tremendously because our customers are not from the neighborhood, Andreas Niotis, vice president of the Varvakeios Market, told Xinhua on Monday afternoon.

The holidays bring their own flood of memories â the joyful and the bittersweet.
Whether we spend the holidays with family, in the company of strangers or in a land of different faith traditions, love â its strength and bonds â carries us.
And loveâs memory remains with us through the years.
We hope the reflections shared by five Richmond area residents of their most cherished holiday memories will elicit warm memories of your own.
Welcomed abroad
One of my most cherished holiday memories was an international one.
In my 20s, I lived and worked in Thailand serving as a Peace Corps volunteer for close to 21â2 years. That meant I missed spending Christmas in Richmond with my family twice.
