Art will 'punctuate' the new look of Clayton Street in downtown Athens

Art will punctuate the new look of Clayton Street in downtown Athens Two years after the East Clayton Street Improvements Project was approved, work continues on the transformation of downtown Athens. Trees were recently removed and trenches dug along the street for new utilities. In the end, the street will be repaved and changed to two lanes; new trees will be planted; and new parking meters installed. Last week, the Athens-Clarke County Commission heard an update from the man who will blend artwork into the streetscape project. Eric Leshinsky, an artist and city planner from Annapolis, Md., was chosen by the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission to merge art into a project that covers three blocks of Clayton from Thomas to Lumpkin streets.
