Presidential candidates approved, election campaign period kicks off

2021-05-24 14:14:20 Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Mongolia’s quadrennial presidential election of 2021 is scheduled on June 9, Wednesday. The General Election Commission (GEC) has approved the candidates nominated by three political parties and coalitions with seats in the State Great Khural.  On May 24, today, the GEC handed over the candidacy cards to the approved presidential candidates, who are Khurelsukh Ukhnaa from the ruling Mongolian People Party, Erdene Sodnomzundui from the Democratic Party and Enkhbat Dangaasuren from The Right Person Electorate Coalition.  After receiving his candidacy card, Former Prime Minister of Mongolia and Chair of the Mongolian People’s Party U. In the weeks leading up to the election, the political stakes have soared. Political polarization has been coupled with court rulings, presidential decrees, party splits, and mergers. All of this has put Mongolia’s rather institutionalized party system in an unprecedented state of instability which, if not checked, might lead to the unexpected collapse of democracy in the country.

Parties nominate candidates for 2021 Presidential Election

2021-05-03 13:57:39 Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Over the past weekend, two political parties and one coalition in the Mongolian parliament, State Great Khural, have completed selecting their candidates to run for the upcoming presidential election of Mongolia, scheduled on June 9, 2021.  In specific, the Steering Committee of the ruling Mongolian People’s Party supported Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, who is a leader of the party and served as Prime Minister of Mongolia between 2017 and 2021, as a presidential candidate.  The Democratic Party – the opposing party in the parliament is currently divided into two parts. The General Election Commission is expected to decide registering which Democratic Party by the end of this week.
