EMA TAGICAKIBAU 27 January, 2021, 3:45 am There is still hope for a global ban on nuclear weapons in our lifetime, and Pacific countries have long shown particular commitment to achieving this goal. Two recent events have been encouraging. In December 2020, the first-ever meeting of state parties to the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone (SPNFZ) Treaty was held to highlight the treaty 35 years after its adoption. It was a virtual meeting, organised by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in response to the call at the 2019 Tuvalu Leaders meeting for the operationalisation of the provisions of the treaty. The second event was the entry into force (January 22 2021) of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
