Mining groups blast Rishi Sunak's 'appalling' decision not to return more than £1billion to pension fund

Submitting. Councillor John McCabe, Honorary Secretary of both the North of England Institute of Mining and the North East Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. “Repaying the £1.2billion would only be a start,” said Alan Mardghum, Secretary of the Durham Miners’ Association, who is pushing for 100% ‘compensation’ for the vast sums he argues workers and their families are owed. But we should be getting 100% of the money from a fund we’ve all paid into. The Government has continued to take that money even despite the recommendations made by an all-party Parliamentary committee. That’s miners’ money – that’s a fund that miners paid into to secure a future for themselves and for their widows.”

Newcastle coal: Last ever shipment leaves the Tyne

The last ever shipment of coal from Newcastle left the Tyne shortly before midnight last night, bringing centuries of North East history to an end. The ship Longwave loaded its final 12,000-ton cargo from Tyneside, which has exported coal since the 13th century. By 1913, the Great North Coal Field employed 250,000 and produced 55million tons a year.  The huge scale of the industry led to the phrase carrying coals to Newcastle to describe a pointless task.
